  • You can try the scenario-based what-if option to calculate the future required results

How to use?

This tool is straightforward to operate. You can use this calculator by keeping the following steps in mind:

  • Choose the grade you need, e.g., 4.0, 4.33, or Custom
  • Add term, e.g., Summer 2025
  • Add your courses with letters, credits, and levels
  • This is an Optional step. Turn on the Percent input to convert percent to letters.
  • Keep repeating the above steps for the required courses

Additionally, to check the future-based GPA needed to acquire a higher CGPA, you can use our what-if option. Just select the option and repeat the above steps.

Important: If your institute follows a different grade mapping, use the custom option to add these values accordingly

GPA in the US

Grade point average (GPA) is the measure of your performance in academia. The formula to calculate GPA is:

GPA= ∑(Points × Credits)÷ ∑(Credits)

Letter to Points general mapping (4.0 and 4.33)

Letter 4.33 Scale 4.0 Scale
A+ 4.33 4.0
A 4.0 4.0
A- 3.67 3.7
B+ 3.33 3.3
B 3.0 3.0
B- 2.67 2.7
C+ 2.33 2.3
C 2.0 2.0
C- 1.67 1.7
D+ 1.33 1.3
D 1.0 1.0
D- 0.67 0.7
F 0.00 0.00

Weighted and un-weighted bonuses

Some degrees add bonus points for advanced-level courses. See the table and add them to the calculation accordingly

Course Level Addition
AP / IB +1.0
Honors +0.5
Regular +0.00

Letter and Percentage Conversion

We have provided a reference letter for the percentage-to-letter threshold. Use this as a reference only.

Letter Points (Grade 4.00 Percentage
A+ 4.0 97-100%
A 4.0 93-96%
A- 3.7 90-92%
B+ 3.3 87-89%
B 3.0 83-86%
B- 2.7 80-82%
C+ 2.3 77-79%
C 2.0 73-76%
C- 1.7 70-72%
D+ 1.3 67-69%
D 1.0 63-66%
D- 0.7 60-62%
F 0.00 Less than 60%

Important: This table is for reference only; always use your school’s guidelines

Examples

Let’s look at some examples to understand the grading system better.

Example # 1: Unweighted Semester

In the following table, we have added examples to help you better understand.

Subjects Credit Points Letters Grade Points
Maths 3 3.1 B 9.3
Physics 4 3.7 A- 14.8
Biology 4 3.3 B+ 13.2
Literature 3 4.0 A 12
14 49.3

GPA= ∑(Grade Points ×Credit)÷Total Credits

GPA= 49.3÷14

GPA=3.5

Example # 2: Weighted Semester

Now, use the above example and calculate the GPA based on Physics is Honors (+0.5) and Biology as AP (+1.0).

Physics 3.7 + 0.5 = 4.2

Biology 3.3 + 1.0 = 4.3

Calculate the GPA again with these changed values and see the uplifting change in the GPA. It gives us the idea of why we should be careful when we are calculating the GPA. Ignoring one simple fact will give you the wrong answer.

Example # 3: Difference from 4.0 to 4.33

The values for A+ grades in these different grading systems can vary slightly. For example, an A+ in physics with a 4.0 scale is 3.94, and a 4.00+ with a 4.33 scale. Make sure you choose the right scale when calculating your GPA to avoid incorrect answers.

Example # 4: Cumulative Grade Point Average

This tool can help you calculate the CGPA as well for multiple semesters. Let’s look at the following example:

A student has the following credits obtained:

37 credits obtained with 12 credit hours

39 credits secured with 11 credit hours

The formula:

CGPA= ∑(Credit Points)÷Total Credits

CGPA= ∑(37+39)÷(12+11)

CGPA= 76÷23

CGPA= 3.3

Credits and quality points

We have been using these terms from the start of our guide; let’s understand properly what they are.

  • Credits: It shows the weightage of a particular subject in a semester. The common rule is that the higher the number is, the more credits that subject has in the semester. A course with credits 4 has bigger impact on your result than a course with credit 2.
  • Quality points: It shows your performance in a particular subject. It is obtained by the following formula:
  • Quality Points=points obtained × credit hours

Common mistakes while calculating GPA and how to fix.

Students make common mistakes when using our tool. Let’s discuss some and learn how to ignore them:

  • Wrong Scale: Using the wrong scale will give you a slightly different answer. Make sure you always choose the correct scale, either 4.0 or 4.33
  • Course level: Ignoring extra points for honors or AP and IB levels can upset your GPA result. Always mark the course level option.
  • Hasty rounding-off: Rounding off in the earlier stage can impact your score little by little. Always keep the 3-4 decimal places till the end, then round off.
  • P/F as points: Counting the failed subjects as points will give inflated averages. Only record credits, never points.
  • Percent threshold: Choosing the wrong percent threshold will give answers according to that specific system. Make sure to choose the right model so you get results that match your institute.

What-if tool usage.

This tool helps you achieve your goal by calculating what you need to achieve to get to a certain CGPA. Let’s see the following formula and learn what it means.

Let RCGPA = Required CGPA, CGPA = Current GPA, CC = Completed Credits, PC = Planned Credits, TGPA = Target GPA

RCGPA=[(TGPA × (CC+PC))-(CGPA × CC)]÷PC

Scenario-Based Case Studies:

Scenario # 1: Student aiming to increase GPA

Let’s take an example of a student who wants to increase their GPA. Some of the important values are as follows:

  • Current CGPA = 3.45 over 40 hours
  • Credits this term = 16 hours, including two 4-credit AP subjects
  • Targeted CGPA = 3.70

After giving this information in our GPA calculator, the planner showed that the student needs to achieve 3.95 in this semester.

Scenario # 2: Moving up the CGPA while improving SGPA

A student who is standing at 2.80 CGPA in the previous semesters wants to increase his CGPA to 3.2. Let’s see what our GPA calculator tells us about this:

  • Current CGPA = 2.80 over 36 hours
  • Credits this term = 15
  • Targeted CGPA = 3.2

After entering these values in our GPA calculator, it tells us that the student needs to achieve 3.60 in this semester to get to 3.2. Although this calculation looks simple, it has taken into consideration many factors. There was not just the general multiplication, but division was also involved.
